Mar 10 to now: The Dr Hadwen Trust - Hitchin - Hertfordshire



Title: Grants Administrator



Duties: The
Charity has been running for 40 years and
successfully funds medical research projects in all prestigious Universities and Institutes all
over the UK. We normally fund between 3 and 5 projects per year with an average
amount of £500,000 awarded per year. The
aim of the Organisation is to replace the use of animals in biomedical research. I run the whole grants process from the
launch to the final stage when the Award is offered to the researchers. The process takes 12 months and includes
advertising, sending electronic application forms, reading scientific
applications and scoring them, finding
external reviewers all over the world to assess the full applications,
preparing a report for the Trustees and advising which projects should be
funded.



I
also manage all the existing projects, conducting lab visits, writing layman’s
reports of all the research for our quarterly magazine and making sure that our
Terms and Conditions are adhered to at all times. I
have a very keen interest in Science and have excelled in this field in my
current position. I read all the preliminary applications along
with the Science Director and the Science Communications Officer and score the
projects according to their scientific value and animal replacement
factor. From the financial point of
view, I manage all the funds allocated to each project. I am in constant contact with the scientists
and have managed to develop a very good rapport with them.





Oct 09 to Mar 10: The Sylvia Adams Charitable Trust – Hatfield
- Herts



Title: Grants
Manager
(6 month contract)



Duties: The
Charity’s had 3 funding criteria: poverty, disability and young people. Dealing with all communication from potential and actual
beneficiaries of grants. Launching
grants process, dealing with all incoming grant applications from charities
(around 200/year). Ensuring timely payment of grants. Maintaining the Trust website, attending prestigious
functions.

Attending Trustees meetings, reporting to them about Trust activity,
taking minutes of the meetings.



Managing the Trust’s two properties: Calculation and recovery of tenants
rent and service charge. I project managed
restoration work to one of the properties halfway through the process and
dealt with the arduous process of reconciling 2 years worth of invoices from
the building company. Frequent visits
and meetings with the Surveyor.

Ensuring compliance with Health and Safety and Fire
procedures, including training the tenants sharing our building.





Aug 06 to Oct 09 Peverel Management Ltd





Title: Estate Manager – Wilshere
Court - Hitchin - Herts



Duties: Managing
a block of apartments single handily.
Obtaining quotes and selecting contractors against set yearly budget. Overseeing
standard of work by contractors, In charge of Health and Safety and Fire equipment, managing budget and authorising
invoices, attending accounts meetings.
In charge of all equipment in communal areas and grounds. Managing
residents’s expectations and working closely both with residents and their
relatives. Also some sales work involved, showing customers round. Needed strong management skills but also a
depth of people skills to achieve a successful, balanced community spirit in
the building.

Duties: Managing residents
finances, reconciling expenditure to budgets, processing Payroll timesheets

systems,; our site was a pilot site for a new software package implemented
and run successfully before being
deployed to 12 other sites. Working

1993 to 2003: Needed a more flexible lifestyle to bring up my son and started my own
language tuition business teaching French and Spanish privately in schools,
businesses also teaching individuals at all levels. I ran this for a number of years, carrying on
well after I “went back to work” on an employed rather than self-employed
basis. I
found teaching very rewarding and
enjoyable and the age range of my pupils varied from 4 to 70 !

Duties: Specific
computer equipment was purchased all over the World, brought back to our
premises in the UK where it was refurbished by our engineers and sold on to
customers all over the World. The equipment consisted of ATMs and points of
sale and our customers in this country included big department stores like
Debenhams, M&S and Banks.

Lots of telephone communication worldwide,
managing the transport and installation of the equipment and all associated
queries and problems. Meetings with
transport companies in this country, constant contact with clearing agents and
customers. Shipment and delivery was
effected against a set budget either by
air, sea (by container) or road. After sales service and customer
satisfaction were paramount as we used to sell large numbers of units.
